The University of Calabria (UNICAL for short) is a medium-sized university with about 27,000 students enrolled, 756 academics, 691 technical and administrative employees.
It is made up of 14 Departments, which offer 80 Degree Programmes provided at Bachelor and Master's Level, as well as 10 PhD Programmes.
The profile of UNICAL was created around the concept of the Campus, which could facilitate integration and cultural exchange and was, and still is, conceived as a large laboratory of ideas and inspirations that have left their mark, thereby moulding the University’s special character.
Situated in Southern Italy, it was built with very large spaces stretching over 200 hectares of land, and with buildings developed on a total covered area of over 400,000 square meters.
UNICAL offers, among many others, the following facilities: Health Centre, Bank Agency, Post Office, Library, Sports Centre, Language Centre, two theatres (with 300 and 550 seats, respectively), two movie theatres (of 250 seats each), two amphitheatres for outdoor events and a day nursery.
UNICAL gives particular relevance to the development of international mobility of students and staff: thousands of students, researchers and teaching staff have benefited from a study, research or teaching period abroad.
For this reason, UNICAL has been awarded the European Label in 2009 as the best practice for the Erasmus Success Stories.
UNICAL has established educational and scientific cooperation with around 220 Universities in the world, promoting exchange mobility of students, researchers, teachers and several internships for graduate students.
Moreover, it is important to highlight the presence of the University of Calabria in the first positions of the Italian University Ranking, CENSIS, as well as its presence in important international rankings such as THE (World, Young, Teaching, Impact), ARWU Shanghai Ranking, U-Multirank and Greenmetric Ranking of Sustainable Universities.
UNICAL's mission is to advance knowledge and contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the international levels of excellence.
Since its very beginning, UNICAL has clearly set out the strategies for the development of its international dimension, as the following achievements clearly show.
UNICAL gives particular relevance to the developing of international mobility of students and staff: 240 cooperation agreements with Universities from all over the world, 466 outgoing students and 147 incoming students last academic year.
Also, it is important to underline the 18 Dual Degree Programmes (Bachelor, Master and PhD), the Erasmus + mobility programme (study and placement), the MOST programme (Mobility of Students outside the EU), the Erasmus Mundus programme of multiple doctoral degree called EUDIME (Erasmus Mundus Doctorate in Membrane Engineering).
Moreover, dedicated scholarships are offered to international students. Nowadays, over 800 international students, coming from 78 different countries, are living in the Campus. In the last few years, UNICAL has become the reference in cooperation with the countries of the Mediterranean Basin and beyond.
